The Mossberg Patriot is one of the most popular affordable hunting rifles in America, and this 28212 configuration is purpose-built for hunters working under straight-wall-only regulations. Chambered in the modern 400 Legend straight-walled cartridge, this Patriot is set up for whitetail-class hunting with manageable recoil and effective performance at typical Midwestern woods ranges.

The rifle is built around Mossberg's time-tested bolt-action design featuring a spiral-fluted bolt with a streamlined bolt handle for smooth, short-throw cycling. The trigger is the user-adjustable LBA (Lightning Bench Action) that lets the shooter dial in a clean pull weight, and a two-position safety sits at the rear of the action for confident handling.

The 20-inch button-rifled barrel is fluted to cut weight and shed heat, finished in matte blued steel, and tipped with a recessed match crown for accuracy. The muzzle is factory threaded, ready to accept a muzzle brake or suppressor. Both the barrel and the stainless steel receiver (which is drilled and tapped for optic mounts) carry the same low-glare matte blued finish, with the stainless substrate giving the package corrosion resistance for wet and humid hunting environments. The button-rifled bore uses a 1:16-inch twist suited to the heavier .40-caliber projectiles of the Legend round.

Patriot rifles feed from an internal drop-box magazine with a total capacity of 4+1 rounds (four in the magazine plus one in the chamber). The barrel is free-floated to keep stock pressure off the bore and let accuracy work as designed.

Iron sights are provided by an adjustable fiber-optic front and a fiber-optic rear, so the rifle can be used as-shipped without mounting the included optic. The fixed black synthetic stock keeps weight down to 7 pounds and is durable enough to shrug off weather, scrapes, and rough hunting conditions. Overall length is 40.75 inches, well-balanced for spot-and-stalk or treestand work. The rifle is set up for right-handed shooters.
