How are these stocks made?
According to the building industry, “engineered” wood (laminated wood) is 50% stiffer than solid sawn lumber (timber cut from a single log). Not surprising when you consider the advances in adhesives and resins that have been made in the past 10 years.
Naturally, the exact process of how the laminate wood blanks are made can't be disclosed, but a special adhesive is used in these stocks that is pushed into the fibers of the wood as the individual layers are pressed together under heat and great pressure. This process helps to bond the adhesive to the wood fibers at the microscopic level, and helps to cure the adhesive as it infuses into the individual wood fibers, actually becoming a part of the wood.
The adhesive helps to stiffen the wood and make it much stronger. That’s the beauty of resins; they are excellent stiffeners, bonders and waterproofers. With all those qualities and benefits coming from just one lamination process, you can see why engineered hardwoods are far superior in strength and rigidity to solid wood.
Factory Fit and Finished
These laminated wood stocks have been machined to fit Saiga rifles. Each stock is machined with house actions, which refers to the steel upon which the measurements are based. From this action, each stock is machined with a 0.020” to 0.040” clearance fit between wood and metal including barrel channels. This allows for variations within firearm manufacturing ranges as well as for minor fluctuations due to wood moisture content during the manufacturing processes. For those who desire an exact fit between wood and metal, this designed clearance provides the space needed for bedding.
Factory fit stocks typically can be bolted to your firearm with no fitting needed. However, please understand that there are occasionally slight variations in individual guns which will require minor fitting adjustments that a novice should be able to perform. These stocks are built to be strong, but they are also beautiful. The color in each individual layer of wood is actually infused into the wood fibers themselves. The color doesn’t sit on the surface, it goes clear through, front-to-back, each wood laminate layer.
