The Glock 27 (Gen 3) is Glock’s sub-compact entry in .40 S&W, launched in 1996 as a backup to the duty-sized G22/G23. Its 3.43-in cold-hammer-forged barrel and dual-spring captive recoil system tame the snappy .40 round inside a frame that’s just 6.50 in long, 4.17 in high and 1.26 in wide. Empty, the pistol weighs 19.4 oz (26.5 oz loaded) and ships with a 10-round magazine, though it accepts the full-size 15-round G22 mags for duty or range use.
Gen 3 features include the proprietary Safe-Action striker system (three passive safeties), a polymer frame nitrided via Tenifer for 64 HRC surface hardness, and molded-in finger grooves with aggressive front-strap checkering. Sub-compact Gen 3 models like the G27 omit an accessory rail to keep the dust-cover short for concealment. Fixed white-outline sights give a 5.39-in sight radius, and the slide’s beefy extractor doubles as a visual/tactile loaded-chamber indicator.
From a 3.43-inch tube, typical duty loads (say a 165-gr Speer Gold Dot) clock around 1,120 fps, generating roughly 460 ft-lb of energy, while 180-gr Ranger T loads run ~990 fps for 392 ft-lb. Recoil is brisk but manageable thanks to the dual-spring assembly, and many off-duty officers favor the G27 as a deep-carry companion to their service G22/G23.
Collector note – "QP" prefix:
Queensland Police armourers ordered a special QP-prefixed serial run for their agency in the early 2000s. Those markings were never imported to the U.S. until this small surplus lot, making these pistols an unusual variant for Glock historians. So get yours today while they're still in stock!
Each pistol bears the small Austrian eagle + "NP" nitro-proof stamp, applied by the national proof house in Vienna to certify that the slide and barrel passed the mandatory smokeless-powder over-pressure test; this civilian proof mark (often mistaken for a wartime Waffenamt) is standard on all factory Glocks and confirms both authentic Austrian manufacture and safe operating integrity.
