Born in the hey-day of the “Wonder-Nine” era, the Smith & Wesson Model 5906 is the last—and arguably finest—stainless-steel member of S&W’s 3rd-Generation service-pistol line (1989-1999). Built on an all-steel frame with a 4-inch barrel and a 15-shot, double-stack magazine, the 5906 was adopted by scores of U.S. police agencies for its combination of durability, capacity and the familiar double-action / single-action trigger system with a slide-mounted decocking safety.
These are Import surplus pistols that served with American departments before entering storage. Graded “Good”, they retain roughly 80-90% of the original matte-stainless finish with honest holster buffing on high edges. Mechanical integrity is excellent: the slide glides on full-length rails, the ambidextrous safety/decocker drops the spurred hammer positively, and the crisp SA break still averages around 4½ lb after the initial 10-lb DA stroke. Each pistol ships with one factory 15-round magazine (S&W pattern).
On the range, the 5906’s heft soaks up recoil—expect 115-gr FMJ to chrono about 1,150 fps from the 4-inch tube while staying flat-shooting and soft in the hand. Robust construction (note the beefy external extractor and triple-locking barrel hood) earned the model a reputation for running tens of thousands of rounds with minimal parts replacement.
Whether you’re after a rock-solid home-defense sidearm, a classic 1990s duty gun for the collection, or a host for a nostalgic IPSC “Limited 10” build, this stainless workhorse ticks all the boxes—and surplus lots in this condition are getting scarce. Add a piece of American law-enforcement history to the safe while supplies last.
