FÉGARMY Arms Factory (FÉG) of Hungary began producing Walther PP/PPK clones in the late 1940s; starting with their Model 48, which differed from the Walther PP only in minor details. By the late 1950s, FÉG began making broader changes and the resulting two-tone pistol became standard issue to both Hungarian military and police forces. Although unusual for military issued firearms to have a reflective polish, it was chosen due to its cost-effectiveness as well as quicker build time.
While few are still in service in Hungarian law enforcement, these pistols have been largely phased out of service. However, due to the large number produced, they have become popular and affordable surplus firearms since being imported to the west.
