The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) Model 1918 was developed by John M. Browning in 1917. During WWI, the U.S. military released a requirement for the BAR. For that requirement, Colt, Winchester and Marlin-Rockwell Corporation produced a total of 85,000 rifles. Colt also manufactured a civilian model 1918 BAR which sold commercially during and after WWI. And today, a semi-automatic version of that commercial rifle is designated the Colt 1918 Self Loading Rifle (SLR). The patented rifle is the only one of its kind in production anywhere in the world.
