I.L. Berridge & Co of Leicester were commercial knitting machine manufactures before transitioning to war production. When made, the No.1 Mk.5 (or the No.2 Mk.5) did not have the model number marked in any way. Through the 1960's and 70's, many of these signal pistols were repaired (usually by EFD or Enfield) and were then engraved 'N0.1' on the left side of the frame.

The No.2 Mk.5 signal pistol closely follows the configuration of the No.1 Mk.5, except that instead of the long barrel with a belled muzzle, it has a short barrel with a stud for latching to a through-armor fitting in many British WWII AFVs (armored fighting vehicles).
