Development began after the unsuccessful SG 530-1 design, with SIG opting for a robust long-stroke gas piston system with rotating bolt derived from the AK-47 platform. The SG 543 features a shortened 300mm (11.8") barrel, compact gas system, folding buttstock, and four-position aperture sights for 100-400 meters. Due to Swiss export restrictions, SIG licensed production to Manurhin of France. The rifle was adopted by several nations including Lebanon, Portugal, and Chile, where FAMAE continues licensed production today. The SG 540 series served as the foundation for the SIG 550, which became the Swiss military's standard service rifle (Stgw 90).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0997/7921/5682/files/IMG_9811__60310.1766513598.1280.1280.jpg?v=1774274654
https://centerfiresystems.com/products/sig-543-folding-stock-carbine-parts-kit-5-56x45mm-with-intact-barrel-matching-serials-lebanese-contract
